My experience includes providing therapy for clients with disabilities in an agency setting and providing counseling to adults 18-80 in the community college setting.  I enjoy combining the two populations by providing counseling and therapy to individuals with physical or learning disabilities.

My strongest and most satisfying experience is helping emerging adults 18-30 who have some sort of physical, learning or another life challenge that is interfering with them moving forward in their life in college or career.  I worked as a community college counselor for nearly 30 years.  My goal is to help you get past or learn to work around your challenges to a more fulfilling life and achieving your goals.

One question I often ask clients is “what would you do if your issues weren’t a barrier any more”?   Then we work on identifying things getting in your way and create a plan to reduce or eliminate your symptoms so that you can focus on achieving your goals.

I work with a variety of mental health challenges including depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma, and adjustment to many life stages and situations.

As a Marriage and Family Therapist I can work with you as an individual but also with significant others and family members supporting your goals. Sometimes emerging adults benefit from a parent or parents joining therapy in the beginning, but this is up to the adult client who is the “captain “of the therapy team. You lead the team working with you and decide who you want as part of your therapy.

I decided to become a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) when I was 51 because I was interested in Energy Psychology techniques.  The first one I was trained in is called Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT).  EFT involves tapping on specific acupressure points on your face and chest while you are experiencing a negative emotion.  Yes, that sounds odd, but I find it to be very effective in helping to diminish, if not eliminate, the negative emotions that underlie anger, fear and trauma. I have seen how Energy Psychology techniques help people in recovery address the anger and trauma beneath their need to use.

I also use Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) and Brainspotting. because they are particularly effective with anger and trauma in a short amount of time. I like working with seniors, but I cannot bill Medicare unless there is a supplemental policy that covers LMFTs.  I work primarily with adults.  I feel I can help relationships more by working with individuals.

I take a straightforward, common sense approach to counseling.  Many times we just need someone to help us sort out what seems jumbled in our minds.  I work with individuals, couples, teens, parents, and children as young as 12.  Many of our past experiences linger in the form of fear.  Bringing to light some of the exaggerated responses we have today as a result of these experiences can help us manage them.  Identifying our habitual ways of thinking that do not serve us well allows us to develop more helpful ways of thinking.  I work with people that suffer from depression, anxiety, or just a feeling that they could be happier in life.  I have experience helping people sort out the aftermath of affairs.  I have special training in treating issues of sexual compulsivity.
